Why is compliance important in the pharmaceutical industry?

Misuse of prescription drugs could lead to an overdose and could cause death. Nowadays this is called an ‘accidental overdose’ and happens more often as you might believe. Therefore it is important to keep an eye on which medicine is freely available and which medicine must remain under tight control.

Take as an example the actor Heath Ledger who was battling with insomnia and flu. In this case the medicine itself was not the cause of death. Instead the ability to obtain lethal doses and mixing certain incompatible drugs was to blame.

Sometimes supervision by a doctor could still have a deadly result. Michael Jackson had access to a dangerous mix of prescription drugs to deal with his constant pain which would make him immune system vulnerable. Jackson’s doctor administered the drug called propofol along with a number of other drugs such as benzodiazepine, diazepine and ephedrine prior to the singers death.

These examples shows that people should be cautious when taking medicine. It is important to ensure that some drugs are kept from the general public when it requires special attention. So compliance regulations are there to save lives.
