If it is not written down, it has never happened

When working in a team, it is vital to document everything that has been discussed, proposed and agreed both internally and externally. It will leave an audit trail which will be crucial to understand why certain decisions have been made, and also make it easier to hand over knowledge.

When important information is not written down, then knowledge transfer will be compromised. It is in these circumstances that contracts with external parties get extended, while the continued working relation is not based customer satisfaction.

My approach is to make it easy to replace myself with another person who is sharing the same skill set. So I will always be ready to instantly share my knowledge with anyone at anytime. The main reason for this attitude is to comply with the contractual agreement to find a suitable replacement when I am not able to finish the assignment at a customer. The ability to have a fast and smooth transition without the loss of vital knowledge will be in everyone’s advantage.
